Today we've just crossed the 1 Million downloads barrier on Ovistore from our EyeMags apps. The top downloaded app is Optical Illusions which itself has done 500K downloads.

5 Billion connected phones world wide

According to our sister site phonecount.com, 5 billion people now have mobile phones. The billion barrier was broken this week. 5 billion people is 73% penetration. Penetration is the number of phones divided by the number of people, because large number of people have more than 1 phone it is possible to have more than 100% penetration; for example Italy has a penetration rate of 151% penetration.

Currently every second there are 25 new phones and 4 new people on this planet.

After only 11 months EyeMags has reached 6M downloads worldwide. These downloads have been from EyeMags itself but also from operator and manufacturer sites. One major download site has been OviStore where downloads are now close to 1M downloads.

Following our successful launch of Android support we now offer the same support for Bada Wave devices using webapps. Now thousands of EyeMags are available as interactive webapps.

CEO Robin Jewsbury said "Bada is a great platform, but Samsung do not allow delivery of apps to their wave phones outside their own SamsungApps download platform. So instead of deliverying native apps we now deliver the same functionality as a webapp from EyeMags. Separately we can package up any eyemags and deliver them via SamsungApps, so we get the best of both worlds."

Any publisher can now experiment creating their apps for any phone using EyeMags technology and then if they want that app downloaded from a native app platform such as iTunes, Ovistore or SamsungApps they can contact us and pay a small fee to have the app made available for download as a native app.

Since relaunching the EyeMags site in Oct 2009 we seen 3 Million downloads of EyeMag apps and this is volume is growing strongly. In the last month we doubled the number of unique users coming to the mobile site.

Version 2 iPad Magazines

Today, we've just released our V2.0 offering for iPad magazines.

This version works much better with the iPad than V1.0 released at the end of March.

New features include:

a fixed menu bar at the bottom of the screen.
Content List can now be view
Easier left/right swiping between pages
Pictures can now be full screen
It is now possible to sell the magazines to the public using PayPal.

The final payment option is in closed beta with a limited number of publishers. But we see this as a significant step forward into incentivising publishers onto the eyemags platform and make money from their content.

At the same time iPhone EyeMags 2.0 is also released with the same new features.

For both the iPhone and iPad EyeMags use the HTML5 features which allow offline webapps to be created. EyeMags makes it easy for publishers of great content to make it available as apps on thousands of different mobile devices.

The future of Magazines

I've just watched a programme I now watch weekly called "The bottom line". It's available in the UK as a video but in the rest of the world it's a podcast only but well worth listening too. It's very clever in that every week they have 3 business leaders from different industries but with a balance and mixture helps complete the true story that Evan Davis the presenter is trying to convey. This week they talked about outsourcing and the magazine industry and they had the Head of O2 UK (Ronan Dunne), the CEO of Future Publishing (Stevie Spring) and the CEO of First Source an Indian outsource company (Ananda Mukerji).

I was fascinated by what this mixture of people would say about the magazine industry and in particular Evan's question to Stevie on how she thought the magazine industry would look in 10 years time.

So the answer from Stevie was surprisingly honest: she did not know but they would try lots of business models, but she still thought that physical magazines would exist on the shelves and said that magazines needed to be "keepable", "portable" and have "serendipity". The answer from Ronan was he thought there was a great compliment between online and physical magazines. For me, Ananda's answer was even more interesting; he said that in India people were not using the fixed Internet with only 12M users but there were 450M users using their phones and that the interest in magazines was becoming more of a microcosm; more granular.

I loved these answers because for me they answered it perfectly but did not quite come to the conclusion I would make. For me it's obvious what will happen and they nearly got to it but did not quite get there. Increasingly, over the next 10 years, people will be using mobile devices to read magazines - in the west this will be devices such as Internet tablets and high end smartphones but in places like India it will be all models of mobile phone.

Of course, in 10 years, in India, the smartphone will be the low end device for magazine consumption anyway. These magazines will be "keepable", "portable" and have "serendity" because they will be delivered by tiny apps (hopefully using our own EyeMags technology); they will be physically on the phone and they will in many case be purchased using micro payments systems such as premium SMS or appstores. This is not the online website technique they thought they were talking about. Online websites will continue to exist as complimentary multimedia to the "keepable" and "portable" magazines which themselves will be delivered content applications delivered to the mobile device.

And it will be eyemags.com which will be one of those delivering this technology to all models of phones in all parts of the world as it is already doing so today.

A great programme well worth listening too.

Professional Publisher features added to EyeMags

EyeMags (eyemags.com), the mobile content app generator for all mobile phones and devices, announces “EyeMags Pro” today. “EyeMags Pro” is designed for the professional publisher. It enables the professional publisher to brand their apps within the builder user interface.

EyeMags allows publishers to create apps on the EyeMags website, which can then be downloaded onto mobile phones. Thousands of free apps are available for downloading. EyeMags have previously targeted the home user, but is now focusing its attention on the professional user. The CEO, Robin Jewsbury, said "Within the EyeMags app builder professional users can now define their own “theme” which totally defines all the branding elements within the application. These themes can be applied to multiple magazines so specific branding can be quickly applied to groups of magazines. Magazines can now have a separate graphical cover, product name and a defined icon. They can also fully define the “about” text and urls in the app. EyeMags is unique in that it currently supports virtually all phones including Java capable phones, iPhone, most smartphones, as well as lower end phones. What’s more we intend to support the iPad by the time it is released in March. This means that EyeMags Pro magazines will be available for the majority of phones and other mobile devices. We believe we’re the only company that is able to do this”.

To start using the professional capability, publishers must join the “Pro Club” for $999 and then can purchase licenses for $49 per app. This is a great deal cheaper than what similar companies are charging.

All this is in addition to the previous announcements in December when EyeMags announced a complete whitelabel capability for companies wishing to re-brand the whole of EyeMags. For an example of it being implemented at mobilemags.360fashion.net. Also in December e-commerce links were released and these are available in pro magazines within all the published stories. E-commerce links enable click to call, click to sms, click to feedback, click to map, and click to video capabilities.

Also released today are 2 videos explaining how the new capabilities are used. The first is an overview and the second is more detailed. Within the second video there are details of a promotion code which enables users to produce a pro-magazine for free (for non commercial use), so they can try before they buy.

As a first example of this being achieved we announce MobileMags a site to allow the Fashion Industry to create Fashion Magazine apps. This site is run as a whitelabel by the Fashion blog network 360Fashion.net.

As the industry gears up for the iPad launch in January, EyeMags is adding extra support for professional publishers.

The big difference is what you see here will only work on the iPad whereas EyeMags will work everywhere. So don't expect quite so much sexy graphics in our version. S60 Touch phone support Released today

EyeMags (eyemags.com), a personal content application generator for all mobile phones, announces today that they can provide full support for S60 Touch phones including the Nokia N97, N97 mini, Nokia 5800, Nokia 5900, Nokia 5230 and Sony Ericsson Satio phones. Content applications are built by the server using WRT widget technology.

Following our successful launch of the iPhone App Creation last week further work with the top end Smartphone market sees us launch support for these latest Nokia and Sony Ericsson Smartphones. Both these technologies build on top of the mobile Java (J2ME) applications used for all other devices.

Now non developers can build their own content applications for most phones from low end to the top end Smartphones and make them available to the public immediately using the EyeMags technology. EyeMags believe this is a world first and expect significant uptake of their service. The advantage for publishers is that these applications are automatically available for all other phone types at the same time.

EyeMags was developed two years ago by founder Robin Jewsbury while working with the Mippin.com team. EyeMags was a prototype system for developing some of the sharing features which were put into Mippin. “What surprised us was the huge uptake in the EyeMags service even though we did not promote it. Nearly 9,000 apps were created in two years and these are now all available for download to the S60 touch phones and the iPhone as well as all other phones” says founder Robin Jewsbury. “EyeMags was such a success that we decided to create a new company, just for EyeMags so we could concentrate on it.”

The applications are simple content applications. EyeMags believe this is a world first and expect significant uptake of their service. The advantage for publishers is that these applications are automatically available for all other phone types at the same time.

1) Private content is now accessible only through a PIN number that only the publisher knows.

EyeMags 1st stage revamp released

The first stage in re-vamping EyeMags is now complete. The new look and feel is released today. The UI is now clean and simple and much more in keeping with its Web2.0 heritage.

A number of new features have also been added. It is now possible to specify private content and adult content is split into 15+ and 18+. The service is now hosted in the US, so our American users will see improved response times.

There's much more to come, in particular you will shortly see improved support for iPhone and high end touch Nokias.

3Million Downloads for EyeMags

EyeMags has reached 3 Million downloads in its first 6 months of existence and it continues to grow at an ever increasing rate. Also since we added the mobile site where you can view magazines online before downloading we've also got to 70K page hits per day (that's ~2Million every month).

However, you may have noticed that in the last 3 months there have been no new features. The reason is that we have been busy working on another project - and this is even more exciting and going to be even bigger than EyeMags. Its announced tomorrow so they'll be more in a blog tomorrow. QR Codes for EyeMag downloads

You can now download your Eyemags using you PC screen using QR codes

If your phone supports bar codes then you should be able to point the phone camera at the symbol and download the EyeMag. Currently the Nokia N95 is best known for this. Run the barcode application in the office folder and after a few seconds a URL will appear - just click it and your phone will go on line to download the application.

EyeMag Preview Widget now available

You can now preview all the slides in your EyeMag on both Phone and PC. On the PC we emulate the real phone experience using a phone "widget" which allows us to replicate a real phone within the browser.

On the phone before downloading you can see what the EyeMag really looks like within the phone browser too. This now means you now can ensure you only download the best EyeMags to your phone. This facility has been there for nearly 2 weeks now and we had been told it would reduce the number of downloads. The reality it increased the downloads because we made the experience better and in addition we've had 100K page views of the preview site.

As far as EyeMags downloads are concernedwe've now surpassed 900K downloads and looking forward to getting to a Million next week.

700K downloads and 1000 EyeMags created

So we're just over two months old and we've had 700K downloads growing at a rate of 20% per week.

On the EyeMags creation front we have had nearly different 400 people create over 1000 different EyeMags. Generally we get 7 new EyeMags every day.

The latest functionality to be added at the beginning of the week was Mobile preview of any EyeMag. Now before you download your EyeMag you can preview it in the phone's browser - this is to help you decide which are the best ones to download. We try to make the preview user experience as near to the application user experience as possible, by sizing the pictures for the phone screen size, but obviously the fast response and usability is far better in the application itself. Some people told us it would result in fewer actual downloads, but the reality is it has made no difference and in addition we're getting 6K page views per day of the preview site.

EyeMags goes Truely Global

From the start (9 weeks ago and more than 1/2 million downloads later) we've always had a Global audience. We decided to better cater for our international presence for adding the following new features:

The above map shows where people are publishing EyeMags. Clicking on the markers shows the top 10 EyeMags from each country. Currently there are 43 countries represented.
EyeMags web-site can now display in your local language. If you live in Russia, Spain, Italy, China, Hong Kong, Brazil, Portugal, Korea or Japan you should see EyeMags in your language (if you enter from the home page). Mobile Internet Growth Map Video

I was looking at the Internet World Map and immediately wondered if the Mobile Internet is different.

We have the data- even better is that with Google Analytics running against our webserver we can make a video of how the growth of our service of Mobile Internet world has grown over the last 8 weeks from the UK outwards whilst we've grown from zero to 1/2 million downloads.

The Mobile Internet IS different - there seems to be a band of usage across Europe through the middle east, India and into Asia. Although usage is high in the US it is much more significant on the fixed Internet.

Downloads by Country - bit of a surprise!!!

When I did this analysis I was really surprised - I could not believe it was right! The countries seem so random - is it statistically significant? Read on and make up your own mind.
I took 120,000 mobile phone download log entries from our EyeMags mobile wap site (wap.eyemags.com). I found the country from the ip address sent from the phone using InetAddressLocator. EyeMags is a C2C content creation tool for users to create their own magazine applications for mobile phones and share these with their friends. Its highly graphical with pictures and text and in the 6 weeks the service has been live the content has gravitated towards "girlie" type content. Although there are examples of all types of content on the system the "girlie" type content is dominating the downloads. The service is incredibly popular and we have now passed through a third of a million downloads. It could be argued that the high download content countries are those that are interested in "girlie" content but I would still argue that these are the countries that are leading countries for the Mobile Internet and in particular for Mobile application downloads.
Are the result statistically significant? Certainly the top 10 countries seem to be and its still quite surprising that to see Indonesia and Romania there. We knew about that India and South Africa were big but did not realise India was a significantly bigger downloader than the US.
However, whether or not the Maldives with 1000 downloads is the 20th country in the world for Mobile Internet application downloads could be seriously questioned. Reality is that we do not have enough data for the lower countries yet.

We've actually had downloads from 133 different countries. China is a position 33, Italy at 40 and Finland at 41 (all these with ~600 downloads each). We probably need to see how these change with time to see how realistic these figures are.

300K downloads already!

I was predicting we would get to 300K downloads on Saturday but its crept up on us earlier than expected. Also we're seeing more registrations from publishers and the magazines they're publishing is more varied - great news. And what more we now have 20K votes to play with so may be I'll be able to do that further phone analysis earlier than I expected.

May be it was the mention in TheRegister that did it.

They correctly described us as supporting lots of handsets but said our content was "patchy". Come on you content generators start filling in our patches!!!

Voting leads to surprising results

The new Voting functionality has been live to 2 weeks now and we're starting to get some interesting data.

When we collect the vote we get the handset type and I quickly noticed some handsets were getting better votes than others (albeit for the same magazines). So I did the analysis in the graph below to see which handset manufacturers got the best votes and here it is. It's based on 10K votes over the last 2 weeks (generally ~20% of downloads result in the user looking for another eyemag in which case we ask them to vote on the one they came from). It may be unfair on LG (as it only had 70 votes in the result set), but I think it is generally accurate and in a few weeks I'll run it again and post the results here. When I have more data I suspect I will be able to break down by handset models as well.

10/4/2007 - Further analysis now we have >15K votes Nokia are still clear winner over all other phones and the ranking remain the same. We need to understand why the perception of Nokia users is that EyeMags appear better. When I have even more data I will break this down further by model to try to understand the reasons for this better.

So the exponential rise continues with no signs of a let off.

Today is our first month aniversary and we've reached a 1/4 Million downloads. Now the question we're asking ourselves is when we get to a million?

Club Eye is Launched

We want everyone to create great EyeMags and to see their popularity grow through downloads. So we've created "Club Eye". Basically the club has 10 levels and you move up the levels as your downloads grow. To get lots of downloads you need good quality EyeMags people like, because the downloaders are now starting to look at the votes not just the number of downloads.

The club has 10 levels and if you have a high level you will get access to the cool features we're adding before everyone else. The list of Club levels are in the at the eyemags share page.

100K downloads in just 18 days

So, EyeMags has been live for just 18 days and its reached 100,000 downloads already and its still growing exponentially.

In the last 18 days we added lots of new features including categories, voting and publishers can now see graphs of their download performance.... much more is coming soon. We've also integrated with several great blogs, including the excellent Biskero blog. Thanks to Alessandro for his blog about us.
